Look What I Found!

I haven't done this in a while, but for some reason, I have just found the most amazing things lately while surfing around and I thought I would share a couple of them with you.

I MUST make this ruffled apron:

Read the tutorial on how to make this beauty at Just Sew Sassy.

I will not rest until I have tasted these pumpkin scones:

Get the recipe at My Life as a Domestic Nerd.

I can hear these Oreo-stuffed cookies calling to me:

Get the scoop on these at The Boys Made Me Do It.

I am so in love with this cute little story about Halloween that even though I probably won't use it (I doubt my kids would buy into this at this point), I had to share.

Read all about the Switch Witch at My Delicious Ambiguity.

Lastly, if you are looking for baking inspiration, you must check out the recipes at one of the 12 Weeks of Christmas Cookies blogs.

Check it out at Abby Sweets
If you notice the "train" going around, stop and stare in amazement at these unbelievable recipes.
I gained 3 lbs just reading last weeks entries!

There are probably a hundred more things I have found in the last week, that are worth sharing, but that's it from me for now. Still, I'd love to know: What's the best thing you have seen out there lately? It's amazing what people think of isn't it?

On Monday, I want to see you Halloween Pictures, so get 'em ready to link up!

Theme Party Thursday

Hello and welcome to the party!
Please join us!

You may have noticed I have been so distracted by the thought that today is
the last Halloween link-up,
that I posted twice yesterday!

Yes, it's true, I had intended to write that Glinda post for Friday so I could focus on the kids before we go trunk-or-treating on Saturday,
(and trick-or-treating on Sunday. whew!)
but I was so focused on getting it finished that I just published it!
Oh well.

You won't be hurt, will you, if I disappear long enough to finish the ties, will you?
Thanks.
You're the best!

As for Theme Party Thursday, do not fear, we will party on!
But of course, the theme will no longer include Halloween after this week.

I was thinking of making the themes for November something like:

Thanksgiving, Fall or Christmas

Wasn't that hard to guess?
LOL

The only problem with this was that
I could not decide on a button design.

I am not a decision maker.

I struggle.

I can be fickle.

I need choices.

So I made a few different buttons.
Three.

I know...recognizability...
I probably just failed advertising 101, didn't I?

Oh well.

Here they are:

No. 1
theme button

No. 2
pinky button

No. 3
blog button

(Obviously, Number 3 is not going to be a year-round sort of button.)
I don't know...I love them all.
Which one is your favorite? Go ahead and take it!

And now, it's time to use those buttons and link up your awesome projects right here!

Here are the rules:

1) Please add one of my lovely buttons (or text link) to you blog sidebar
or to the post itself so others can play along.
2) Please stick to the theme (FALL OR HALLOWEEN as closely as you can.
3) Only family- friendly links, please.
4) If you link up, please do your best to visit some of the other participants. Everyone likes comments, so please spread the love!

A Good Witch

Last year, I dressed up as Glinda the Good Witch. I am reposting some info on how the crown was created. There are no good pictures because I didn't really know how to write a tutorial yet, but I hope it inspires you to make something cool anyway. The plastic sheet can be used for so many great projects!

The making of the crown was a little bit intimidating but I knew I would never be happy with the cheap commercial crowns.

Here are the steps I took to create this crown:

1) I bought a sheet of 18" x 24 " plastic that is supposed to be used for quilting patterns. It was $4 at JoAnn's.
2) I created a repeat pattern on Photoshop that would be just the right size because I didn't want to end up having to cut one of the shapes off in a funny place. I printed my pattern and traced it onto the plastic sheet, then cut out the top of the crown.
3) I cut any extra height off of the bottom. (I could have cut a LOT  more than I did.)
4) I rolled it up to the right size and used hot glued to secure it in place.
5) I used low temperature hot glue to make a pattern of dots and lines that I could sprinkle with glitter (before it dried). This added interested and a little texture.
6) I glued gems and glitter onto the top and a pre-made silver trim (JoAnn's) at the bottom edge. Then I glued in some silver sparkler looking things I found in the floral department at Hobby Lobby.

Here is the final product:

You can see mine is way too tall , but it certainly was the "star" of my costume the way it sparkled!

Look at my little Dorothy! *sigh* Already she looks so much older this year!

Highlights of My Week

I am finally ignoring all my housework sitting down to my computer to show off a few of the amazing links we had last Thursday. I will be back tomorrow for another Theme Party Thursday...it will be the last time our theme will include Halloween. I'm pretty easy, I'll bet you can guess the new theme. I sure hope I have a new button up and running for you by tomorrow.

Have I told you I am refinishing a rocking chair from hell and helping the kids decoupage it for a school charity auction? Actually, it's going quite well, just ssuuuuppperrrr time consuming since I cannot stand poorly painted furniture and I am a perfectionist little bit particular when it comes to painting (especially when it is for someone else!) We chose an ILLINI theme since we are BIG Illinois fans and so are lots of people around here who may be bidding at this auction. Keep your fingers crossed though. I am more artsy fartsy and maybe I should have thought of that because I am having a hard time combining the BIG10 theme with artsy fartsy.

At this time, I am also making 2 Hogwarts uniform ties, which thankfully seem pretty easy. I found some burgundy satin on sale at JoAnn's and am trying not to stress. Man! That stuff frays a lot!

After the ties are finished I will be making a jersey for the Argentine soccer team. Ever heard of this guy?

Well, neither had I. This is Lionel Messi, an Argentinian soccer star.
This is who MVP is going to be for Halloween.
What have I gotten myself into?

LOL

Speaking of Halloween, I am going to repost the tute I did on how to make Glinda the Good Witch's crown. The material and techniques I used for that crown can be applied to a lot of different crafts or costumes. I will do that in a separate post since you may have already fallen asleep reading this this post is getting long.

Now on with the features because I totally need a happy distraction!

I adore these little monster from GeorgiaBE

Sour Cream Cut-Out Cookies

The arrival of autumn means that certain recipes will get pulled out of the recipe box again in this house. But no matter what season or holiday we celebrate, it seems this is the first recipe that is requested. I added a little more fresh ground nutmeg to the batter to give these just the perfect amount of spice.
I rolled them out thick and removed them from the oven just as they were beginning to turn a golden color..I wanted them to be moist and soft

I frosted the soft, spicy cookies with vanilla buttercream frosting (I know it looks chocolate, but it's not) and attempted to decorate them as I would with Royal icing; piping and flooding. The results are just OK. The piping ended up looking a lot like a tootsie roll, (which may also have been because I was not in the mood to get out my piping tips and bag, so I used the plastic bag method) but the flavor was perfect!

Here is my Sugar Cookie recipe again, with just a little more fall "spice".

1/2 C butter or margarine, softened
1 C Sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt

1/4- 1/2  tsp. nutmeg
1/2 C sour cream
2 2/3 C flour

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg, then sour cream. Add dry ingredients, adding flour last, about 1/2 C at time. Dough will be sticky. Roll thick with a rolling pin and cut out into shapes. Bake at 350 until just before the edges brown.

This time, I rolled the dough between 2 sheets of waxed paper to avoid having to add in more flour. I think this makes the cookies a little more moist and tender, but you may need a helper to hold the paper down, or try this method from Cheryl at Tidymom.

Monday Morning Field Trip

This Monday, I thought I'd take you on a field trip. It was all Turkey's idea, I swear.

I have noticed, as I am learning photography and editing, that there are certain locations and lighting situations that I really struggle with. The number one "trouble" situation is usually when I feel hurried or am trying to sneak a picture like I did here:

This was just a random shot, that sort of cracked me up, so I grabbed it through the car window.
Definitely not great photography. We'll call that photo journalism. ;)

When I go on these "field trips" it is tempting to just toss the results when they are less than desirable, but since my blog is a record of my own journey, I am going to post some of these here...before I toss them.

Don't get me wrong, I am not going to post every picture I take. You don't have that much time!
I am a big believer that some shots should just be deleted. But, some shots, even grainy ones...*ahem* can be worth playing with, if only to improve your editing skills.
That is the only way I know how to learn: practice.

Anyway, on with the Field Trip.

Turkey thought it might be fun to take a trip to our downtown to Del's Popcorn Shop.
There are very few shops left in this town that have stood the test of time, unfortunately, but the Popcorn Shop is one of them. It is truly an icon in our town. Turkey loves their popcorn...and their candy. He thought you might like it too, so won't you join us?

This is the outside. I did a little retro thing with the picture because it reminded me of the 70's,
when I grew up.

Turkey is a great big ham, (<=I crack myself up!) so he insisted on getting his picture taken right there with his favorite snack.

These are their FAMOUS caramel apples. So far, this Halloween season, they have sold over 40,000 caramel apples. Yes, they are that good.

What's that you say?

You want one?

You can go here to buy them...
but hurry because they STOP making them at Halloween and we won't see them again until next year.

Here are some of the other sights we saw during the field trip.

Yum!

Here's one I did just for the purposes of this trip:

This picture is a result of over-cropping...which is another way to say that I took a normal picture and tried to extract a teeny tiny section of it, then blow it up to look like I got this shot on location. I did not.
I should have noticed this opportunity while I was there, not waited until I got home. Over-cropping usually results in grainy images because you are blowing something up way more than it should be blown up.
I used to do this a lot when I got my very first digital camera. But I try not to do it at all now.
My rule:
Always try to frame your shots in-camera.

Generally speaking, I am really aiming for reducing the need to edit.
I prefer to edit for fun or to add artistic value,
rather than to correct silly mistakes like setting my ISO too high.

Could we say that the grain is giving it a "newspaper" feel? Ummm, yeah, I totally did it on purpose. ;)

...or letting the auto focus set up on the wrong thing.
THAT one frustrates me, so I am pretty careful to avoid it these days.
I still use manual focusing quite a bit for certain shots.

Are you hungry yet?
LOL

These last two shots made me a little nutty because the color was off. I did some cropping and tweaking, but these are not making me happy. I think there were just way too many reflective surfaces fighting for my attention here. And the not-so-great lighting.

I think sometimes it's just better to re-do the shot.
If these pictures were for an album, that is what I would do if possible...or skip them altogether.

In the interest of science, I may have to go downtown again and buy some Witchy Corn and
take it outside to photograph it in natural light.
Then of course, I would need to eat it, because I hate waste. ;)

ditto for the Jelly Belly Buckets. Aren't these cute?

What do you do with shots like this? Keep or Toss?

Thanks for joining us on our field trip! Turkey is awfully glad you came along. Have a great day!

Theme Party Thursday

blog button

It's Theme Party Thursday again!! This is the day we link up our creative projects.
This month's theme is Fall or Halloween projects.

This week, I tried something different. I posted my own project in a separate post because I wanted to link it up to a few other places (like you do!) and I wasn't sure if that was considered RUDE to link up a link-up. You know?

It's all about making creepy eyeball night lights. Of course, I think these are the best I have SEEN!
LOL. I crack myself up!

...and please take note of Turkey's Favorite, (in the post) in case you have a Turkey of your own. ;)

Don't forget to sign up to win $25 worth of products at No Slippy Hair Clippy here. The giveaway ends Friday at midnight. bbwwaahhh-ahhh-ahhh!

OK. There is nothing scary about these adorable bows, but they do have some sales going on for their awesome Halloween clips. (Don't forget to click that link for a discount code if you are going over there to SHOP.)

Who loves you?
uh-huh

Last week's links were so much fun!
Did you get a chance to see these up-cycled ghost lanterns from Making Memories With Your Kids?

I can think of several fun games to play with the Daisies using these!

I can't wait to see what you have for me this week!
